Roundtable on US-Iran Relations with Mr. Richard Nephew
Hergüner Bilgen Özeke hosted a private round table event on June 9, 2016 with guest speaker Mr. Richard Nephew, the lead sanctions expert for the United States during negotiations with Iran from August 2013 to December 2014, and currently a nonresident fellow at the Brookings Institution specializing in US-Iran relations.
Although Mr. Nephew supervised the dramatic expansion of Iran sanctions during his tenure as director for Iran at the US National Security Council, his position during the roundtable discussion focused primarily on the many cross-border investment opportunities and advantages for the US, Iran, and Turkey now that the sanctions are starting to be lifted.
Though space was limited, a number of well-respected members of the business, academic, media, and diplomatic community were in attendance. They had the opportunity to hear a thoughtful account of the trajectory of US-Iran relations now that the sanctions regime is drawing to a close. This was followed by a Q&A session where participants received refreshingly candid and positive answers to their questions, leaving the impression that Iran has a bright future ahead.
